Though Zodiac is adapted from Robert Graysmith's own book and is therefore heavily informed by his own view of the events, the film has nevertheless been praised extensively for its historical veracity.

Fincher ultimately made the decision not to depict any alleged Zodiac killings which didn't leave behind victims or witnesses.

Though the Lake Herman Road murders are largely agreed to be Zodiac's first attack, Fincher opted to exclude them from his film due to a lack of corroborating witnesses.

Fincher instead starts the movie with Zodiac's next act: the murder of Darlene Ferrin, an attack which left a survivor, Mike Mageau, to tell the tale.
