20 Things You Probably Didn't Know About The Godfather

5. Vito's Cat Was A Nightmare

The Godfather
Paramount Pictures

When Vito speaks to Bonasera in the iconic "You come here on the day of my daughter's wedding" scene, we see the Don casually playing with his cat. It's common knowledge that this feline was a stray, which Francis Ford Coppola happened to find that day in the lot. Coppola never confirmed the point of the animal in this scene but many viewers believe he represents Vito's 'hidden claws' that hide behind his friendly facade.

Even though this kitty doesn't do much, he actually messed up the scene! Due to the little critter's incessant purring, some of Marlon Brando's dialogue was obscured. As a result, the actor had to rerecord his lines.
