20 Things You Somehow Missed In Alfred Hitchcock Movies
12. Grace Kelly's Evolving Wardrobe - Dial M For Murder
Dial M For Murder was Grace Kelly’s first Hitchcock film, in which she would play the ‘blonde victim’ Margot Wendice. In this story, Margot’s husband Tony has arranged for her to be murdered after he finds out about her affair. But his plans completely go off track when she stabs the hired murderer in the back out of self-defence. Hitchcock instructed Grace Kelly to behave in a trance towards her final scenes with the film, as if she was somewhat detached and distant.
To convey Margot’s descent of emotions, her outfits start with bright colours but gradually grow darker and darker as the story progresses.
At the beginning of the film, Kelly’s character suggests a happy life in which nothing is wrong. Towards the end, she’s framed for murder and her outlook on things is a more sombre affair - as Hitchcock instructed Grace to behave in a trance towards her final scenes, as if she was somewhat distant.
