12. Jake's Atrophied Legs Are Prosthetics

Avatar Jake Neytiri

You probably noticed that, in his human form, Jake has distinctly atrophied legs due to being paralysed from the waist down, and numerous times throughout the film James Cameron focuses on Jake's thin legs.

But you probably assumed this was an entirely CGI trick pulled off in post-production, right? Wrong.

In fact, Cameron had two prosthetic legs created from a cast of an actual paraplegic's atrophied legs, which were then fitted to Worthington while his real legs were tucked down into the wheelchair and later removed from the scene digitally.

If you thought Jake's legs looked amazingly lifelike and had not a hint of digital trickery about them, that's why.
