20 Things You Somehow Missed In Back To The Future

11. Doc's Entrance Doesn't Make Sense

The DeLorean
Universal Pictures

As Marty arrives at the mall to meet Doc, the DeLorean is unveiled to him and the audience for the first time. As the time machine reverses out of the van, the automobile's door opens vertically, revealing the driver and inventor, Doctor Emmett Brown. It is a wonderful entrance which is made more effective by Michael J. Fox's face of wonder and Alan Silvestri's beautiful score.

There is one teeny-weeny problem with this scene, though. It doesn't make any sense. How did Doc get inside the DeLorean if the vehicle could barely fit in the back of the van? Did he get in the DeLorean, drive into the van, close it up, and drive out just to impress Marty? That's the only explanation, right?

But that doesn't hold up either. When Doc sees him, he's amazed Marty made it. So, he didn't know Marty was there! Who was Doc trying to impress with his grand entrance? His dog, Einstein?

I know this moment was shot to be an epic reveal of the time machine and the director wasn't really focusing on realism but it's still worth mentioning.
