Since first coming together to fight Loki in the Battle of New York, the Avengers have gone through a fair amount of roster changes. One of the biggest came after Earth’s Mightiest Heroes fought and defeated Ultron.

Both Tony and Clint retired, and Thor and Banner went off-world, leaving Cap and Nat in charge of the relatively untested team of Vision, Wanda, Sam, and Rhodey. They weren’t exactly the '27 Yankees as Captain America said, and so they needed moulding into a team of genuine Avengers.

Only two of these were in Lagos with the two original Avengers hunting down Brock Rumlow. Though Vision and Rhodey were nowhere to be seen, Sam and Wanda were there. Falcon had worked with Cap before, and on this particular mission it seemed that Steve was taking the time to mentor the future Scarlet Witch.

When he was asking Wanda what she saw, he wasn’t asking for his own benefit, he was asking to make sure she was taking everything in for herself. Unfortunately, based on what happened next with Crossbones, it seems that she was maybe taken into the field a little too early.
