As expected for a project of this level of technical innovation, new pieces and methods of filmmaking were developed to realise the complex visuals as well as maintain a degree of scientific fidelity.

VFX studio Framestore developed a "light box" (also affectionately known as Sandy's box) to replicate outer space's wide range of light and darkness. The box involved nearly two million LED bulbs and massive screens (think a proto-version of the Volume) that projected the orbital vistas needed to bring the story to life.

The extensive lighting allowed for a stunning amount of detail to be realised, as well as giving the feature's CG elements a level of visual fidelity rarely seen in movies up until that moment, or since.
