16. The Story Almost Wasn't Set In Space

Due to the success of Gravity, one would be forgiven for thinking that the story was always meant to be set in space. However, it turns out that Alfonso Cuaron and his son/writer Jonas initially had other plans for the film's setting before ultimately going with space.

Above anything else, the father/son duo was focused on making a picture about overcoming overwhelming odds. As a matter of fact, their initial references to their cinematic undertaking were Duel and A Man Escaped, two projects that are far removed from the orbital terror of Gravity.

That said, according to Alfonso, the above mentioned films all embodied the idea of an individual facing adversity in a high-octane environment. As a result, space was the logical place to go for a filmmaker wanting to tell a resonant story in a familiar environment realized in a novel manner.
