15. The Mechanical Rig Built For Its Orbital Sequences Proved To Be Challenging

As mentioned before, the rig designed to render Earth's orbit in stunning detail was an undeniable technical achievement. That said, it was not the most pleasant filming experience for Sandra Bullock.

The production team quickly realised that the tightly packed rig would be claustrophobic in nature. This became especially true when Bullock had to spend up to 10 hours in the contraption because getting into it was a time-consuming affair. In addition to this, she was separated from the rest of the crew by a large black curtain, further adding to her isolation.

Because of this, Alfonso Cuaron and the crew strove to make the process as bearable as possible for their lead actress through means such as giving the aforementioned nickname Sandy's box as well as using digital means to ease the burden of replicating zero gravity.
