20 Things You Somehow Missed In Jaws
15. Amity Island Isn't Real
The popular beach destination of Amity Island is merely fictional. The movie was actually filmed on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. Whereas Amity Island has its own town, Martha’s Vineyard has six different towns on it.
It was the first time the location was ever used for a feature film and its main appeal was that you could travel far away from land and still be in shallow waters, making the mechanical sharks easier to function. Many of the towns inhabitants were used as extras and paid $64 an hour for their service on the beach. At first, the locals were welcoming and hospitable to the cast and crew but soon grew tired of the noise pollution and overcrowding of their popular attractions.
Unsurprisingly, the summer tourist population of Martha’s Vineyard has tripled on average since the release of Jaws.
