20 Things You Somehow Missed In Layer Cake
5. Roger Ebert's High Praise
While Matthew Vaughn's big screen bow may have only raked in a modest $11.9 million at the box office on a $6.5 million budget, the drug dealing and double-cross crammed feature did end up going down a treat with a number of respected critics.
On top of coming home with a decent 80% "Certified Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, well regarded film pundit Roger Ebert would reward Vaughn's efforts with a commendable 3.5 out of 4 stars. Not bad at all.
Upon noting how Vaughn had a hand in creating the likes of Snatch and Lock, Stock, and Two Smokin' Barrels beforehand, the legendary reviewer would note "this one works better than those films because it doesn't try so hard to be clever and tries harder to be menacing".
Ebert was also quick to send praise leading man Daniel Craig's way, explaining that "Craig is fascinating here as a criminal who is very smart, and finds that it is not an advantage because while you might be able to figure out what another smart person is about to do, dumbos like the men he works for are likely to do anything".
