20 Things You Somehow Missed In Napoleon Dynamite

9. The Life Of A Liger

Napoleon Dynamite
Fox Searchlight

Napoleon is obsessed with the fantastical creatures of myth and legend. One of the creatures many viewers dismiss as just another poorly rendered fantasy is a real animal. The liger, Napoleon's "pretty much [...] favourite animal" exists.

A liger is created when a male lion mates with a female tiger. However, despite Napoleon surely stating it, the liger is not "bred for its skills in magic." They also don't wield tails that look like medieval maces.

The earliest reference to lion-tiger hybrids takes us back to 19th Century India, though, the name liger wasn't coined until the 1930s.

The liger is often considered to be the largest cat in the world, with the total length of a full-grown male ranging from 9.8 to 11.8 ft. Their typical life span is between 13 and 18 years.

The reverse of a liger, a tigon, also exists.
