He may not have had as much screen time as some of the other main characters in the movie, but Ving Rhames’ Marsellus Wallace is arguably the most influential in the entire story. Unlike anyone else, he has a hand in all three of the movie’s chapters.

He sent Jules and Vincent to retrieve the briefcase from Brett while demanding the latter take his wife out, he was tracking down Butch and was assaulted by Maynard and Zed, and he sent Mr. Wolf to help Jules and Vincent after Marvin was killed on the road.

There are several mysteries surrounding the gangster that are presented throughout the movie. The main one being what is in the briefcase, for which there are plenty of theories even stretching so far as it being Marsellus’ soul. Another, potentially more grounded question, is what happened to the back of his head.

The first fans see of Mia Wallace’s husband is the back of his bald head, highlighted by a big plaster. The truth of why this was included in the movie isn’t for any particular narrative-led reason, but reportedly Rhames cut his head while shaving the day of shooting and Tarantino simply loved the look and kept it in.
