20 Things You Somehow Missed In Rocky

11. Apollo Creed Failed American History

When we are first introduced to Muhammad Ali stand-in, Apollo Creed, he seems more like a high-powered corporate marketer than a heavyweight champion. Upset that his upcoming match has fallen through, he's working with his promoter to find a new challenger.

Creed comes up with the brilliant idea to give a Philadelphia native a chance at the title on January 1st… America's birthday? This is the actual line in the movie, which is strange since January 1st is actually New Year's Day, and July 4th is America's birthday.

Ok, so here's what he probably meant- the date of the fight, in the movie, is January 1st, 1976. If you're not brushed up on American history, 1976 marked the nation's 200th birthday. Still, any way you slice it, January 1st is not America's birthday.
