20 Things You Somehow Missed In Solo: A Star Wars Story
18. The Pykes
The opening words of
Solo: A Star Wars story painted the picture of a lawless galaxy. With the
creation of the Empire came a time of chaos, and outlaws vying for power and
control across the galaxy. The likes of Crimson Dawn and the Hutts were
able to thrive in this environment.
Then there were the Pykes, gangsters that controlled the spice mines on Kessel. Solo was the first time such characters were seen in live-action in the Star Wars universe, and from just this appearance more casual fans would have no clue as to how important a role they played in the creation of the Galactic Empire.
Though they appeared numerous times through The Clone Wars, easily the biggest storyline that involved the Pykes was the mystery of Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas' death. Sifo-Dyas of course was the Jedi who commissioned the clone army for the Jedi on Kamino, but was killed by the Pykes on the orders of Count Dooku. It was from here Lord Tyranus and Lord Sidious were able to manipulate the clones and thus play both sides of the battle for many years.
None of this was touched on in Solo, so it would be easy to miss just how big a deal the Pyke Syndicate was, and why the clearly powerful Dryden Vos was so eager to avoid waging war against them.
