John Goodman is one of a few select actors who often gets the chance to work with the Coens.

He's been with them from the early years of their filmmaking career, so the Coens gave Goodman's role in their film Barton Fink a little shout-out in The Big Lebowski in the form of Walter's home security business's slogan: "Peace of Mind," the same thing Goodman's Barton Fink character said he sold.

This connection might have something to do with the fact that the Coens often set aside one unfinished script to do some work on another. During the writing of The Big Lebowski, Joel and Ethan did work on Barton Fink. The two scripts being written simultaneously was bound to result in some connections, no matter how slight.
