20 Things You Somehow Missed In The Lost World: Jurassic Park
8. Roland's True Everest Story
While a great deal of the dino-infused madness that is seen occupying the screen throughout Spielberg's prehistoric picture is the stuff of glorious fantasy, one particular exchange in the midst of the relentless action actually came from some genuine real-life roots.
As Pete Postlethwaite's Roland Tembo finds himself conversing with Vince Vaughn's Nick Van Owen in the pouring rain about his need to take out the "greatest predator that ever lived", the former recalls a story about a bloke who wandered all the way to the top of Mt. Everest without any oxygen.
Upon almost dying the man was asked why he went up there to die. The adventurous soul then responded by saying "I didn't. I went up there to live." These were actually the words genuinely uttered by one Reinhold Messner after legitimately performing said feat back in August of 1980 and very nearly biting the dust in the process.
Who knew his actions would inspire the pursuit of a fictional Tyrannosaur some 20+ years on, eh?
