20 Things You Somehow Missed In The Shawshank Redemption

8. Making An Exit Thanks To Exodus

Knowing that Andy’s hiding his rock hammer in his Bible makes the cell-searching scene particularly nerve-wracking — one wrong move or thorough investigation and he’ll certainly be caught and reprimanded for his planned escape. Still, despite the risk, Andy still has time to be ironic with his placement of his hammer.

Once his hammer is discovered, look at where he decided to start cutting out space for it: The Book of Exodus, named after the Greek word for departure. This book also details the plight of the formerly-enslaved Jewish people as they escape from Egypt, drawing parallels to Andy’s own escape.

Of course, Exodus is very early on in the Old Testament, so it's probably a good thing none of the prison guards ever opened up that Bible. Andy would've been busted because of this conspicuous hammer placement.
