When dealing with a movie with lots of emotional payoffs, a truly masterful director will always do plenty of planting in the early moments of the film to reward viewers on their rewatches. Frank Darabont is one such director.
On Andy’s first night at Shawshank, a keen eye will notice that an exterior shot of the prison is angled from right near the creek that Andy will eventually be running through nearly 20 years after this very first night.
The shot means nothing to a first-time viewer, but it’ll be incredibly meaningful for attentive viewers watching the movie again.
