Red is respected around Shawshank Prison because everyone knows that he’s got the hookups. No matter what it is that they need, they can be certain they can turn to him to find it, secure it, and sell it to them without the guards knowing. One such item, of course, is cigarettes.

However, notice the brand that Red’s dealing with throughout the film: They’re Marlboro Miles, a brand that didn’t exist until the 1990s, being peddled decades before they were ever invented.

Either Red is sourcing his product from some sort of time-traveling cigarette distributor, or the props department simply didn’t bother to find period-appropriate cigarettes to use in the scene.
