20 Things You Somehow Missed In The Shawshank Redemption

5. Andy’s Strange Sewer

If there’s one point that a moviemaker will drive home again and again, it’s that attention to detail is key if you want to create a believable world. As long as the on-screen world is believable, the viewer will easily be swept away by the film. That’s what makes revealing goofs so frustrating.

Take Andy’s experience with the sewer pipe: When he first breaks through the top of the pipe, water gushes out like a fountain as if the liquid was pressing against the inside of the pipe. Eventually, he’s able to climb inside the completely drained pipe. However, careful thinkers should realize that the pipe would only drain as low as the hole in the pipe was.

This sort of failed logic is a little distracting, but movies violate the laws of physics all the time — The Shawshank Redemption isn’t the first or the last to do so.
