20 Things You Somehow Missed In The Shawshank Redemption

3. How Many Yards In A Mile?

Shawshank Redemption
Columbia

Andy’s eventual escape from the Shawshank Prison is one of the biggest emotional payoffs in the entire film. His endless hours spent hammering away at his wall, his difficulty smashing through the sewer pipe, and his arduous crawl through the disgusting sewage is enough to crack even the toughest heart.

Too bad it’s not entirely accurate.

Listen to the way Red describes the length of the sewer: “500 yards, just shy of half a mile.” Think about that: If one mile is 1,760 yards, then 500 yards would only be less than a third of a mile. It’s still quite a long way to crawl, but it’s not nearly as long as half a mile like Red says.
