In recent years, superhero films began to dip their toes in other genres in an attempt to keep the proceedings fresh and/or unique. As a result, it is not surprising that the creatives behind these projects are inspired by seemingly left-field choices.

On a podcast run by the Russo brothers, Taika Waititi stated that the film was inspired by the likes of Flash Gordon and Big Trouble in China.
