20 Underrated Movies You Have To See
6. Locke
Sometimes films need a big cast and a more overtly thrilling plot in order to work, but Locke proves this idea wrong with ease. It's a one man show set in a car, and what a show it is. Tom Hardy portrays Ivan Locke, a successful and happy construction manager whose life is up-ended when he gets a call from a woman (voiced by Olivia Colman) with whom he had a brief affair saying she's gone into labour with his baby.
Despite the fact his wife and sons are waiting for him back home, and despite needing to be at work the following day, Locke gets into his car to be with her. Along the way, he gets calls from his wife (voiced by Ruth Wilson) and sons (voiced by Tom Holland and Bill Milner) and must confess his infidelity. Adding insult to injury, he also imagines his absentee father is sat with him in the car, who he berates for being such a bad dad.
The film was directed and written by Peaky Blinders' Steven Knight, and thanks to Hardy and Knight's script it is a film which never lets up and remains tense and dark throughout. But also, oddly hopeful.
