20 Underrated Movies You Have To See
17. Ghost Town
Another comedy for your enjoyment, Ghost Town is arguably Ricky Gervais' biggest accomplishment on the big screen. Featuring an all-star cast led by Gervais, Greg Kinnear, Tea Leoni and Kristen Wiig, this is a flick full of well-placed humour, silly characters and heaps upon heaps of emotion and maturity.
Following dentist Bertram Pincus (Gervais) after he momentarily dies during an operation, Ghost Town sees the world's grumpiest, cynical and most awful man able to see and converse with the dead. Initially annoyed and feeling harassed by the wayward spirits, Pincus realises that he has to help them gain closure from their previous lives and goes on an enlightening journey to aid them on their way to the afterlife.
Though some of the humour is typically Gervais-ian, the emotional aspect of the story offers the audience moments of real heart and intelligent dialogue, with themes ranging from love to hate, life to death, and family to friends. In a career made out of being hysterically rude and unorthodox, director and writer David Koepp gives Gervais the chance to show how moving and multi-layered he can be, and it pays off in spades.
