20 Underrated Movies You Have To See

16. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

The Boondock Saints
Columbia Pictures

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within came out in 2001, directed by Final Fantasy franchise creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, and was the first ever photo-realistic computer animated motion picture put to film. It also features a stunning voice cast, just to add to the brilliant visuals, including Ming-Na Wen, Alec Baldwin, Donald Sutherland, Ving Rhames and Steve Buscemi.

The Spirits Within sees scientist Aki Ross (Wen) attempt to get rid of the Phantoms - a bizarre and formidable alien race who have overthrown Earth - but do it in a less dangerous way than the military, headed by General Hein (James Woods). Joining up with a team of soldiers styling themselves "Deep Eyes", Aki attempts to push back against Hein's violent tactics as the Phantoms invade their protected city.

The film is visually stunning, even today, and though it received mixed reviews upon its release none of them capture the true essence of the movie. It's full of unique villains, strong characters, and revolutionary graphics that ushered in a new wave of animated cinema, and the action is brilliant from start to finish.
