20 Underrated Movies You Have To See
12. Road To Perdition
Road to Perdition was released in 2002, directed by filmmaking maestro Sam Mendes. It has the distinction of not just being one of Tom Hanks' most daring roles, but also for being the late, great Paul Newman's last on-screen movie appearance (he later had a voice role in Cars).
The crime drama follows Michael Sullivan (Hanks), a mob enforcer who must decide between honouring his commitment his boss (Newman) and saving his son (Tyler Hoechlin) after he sees a murder. After the rest of his family is killed for what the boy saw, Michael and his son go on the run and seek retribution against those who ruined their lives.
Though it's easy to dismiss this as a simple and generic gangster flick, you'd be mistaken for thinking that's all it is. Sure, there's guns, mob bosses and typical mob shenanigans, but amongst all of that is a compelling story about a man reconnected with his son, who he has neglected in the past because of his job.
Hanks and Hoechlin are both phenomenal in their roles, offering up some seriously moving moments, but it is Paul Newman who steals the show as mob boss John Rooney, chewing up every piece of dialogue he has and captivating with every scene. It also features strong supporting roles courtesy of Jude Law, Daniel Craig and Stanley Tucci, and an unforgettable grasp of symbolism and powerful imagery.
This is one epic tale you don't want to miss.
