Why It's Going To Suck: The Joke Is Old (Really Old) The Expendables already felt like a joke worn thin by its second installment, and even with a bunch of new added cast members - including Harrison Ford and Mel Gibson - it's not looking all that good for The Expendables 3, which is set to explode into theatres in August. There's something innately off-putting about the fact that there are now three Expendables films in existence, almost like the self-awareness has been drained from within. Because, really, what are these movies unless they are at least aware of their ridiculousness? The Expendables 2 seemed to forget that the first movie was something of an in-joke, so God only knows how po-faced Sylvester Stallone and company are going to be on this one. Stallone isn't even directing this time around, as the task has been appointed to little known filmmaker Patrick Hughes. Expect this to be both overstuffed and underwritten.
