20 Upcoming Movies That Made INSANE Casting Choices
6. Tom Cruise - Digger Rockwell (Digger)
Tom Cruise has exclusively been on the mega-budget blockbuster treadmill for so long now that many of his fans lost hope of him ever actually returning to dramatic work.
But Cruise's next film, Digger, will be his first non-tentpole project since 2017's American Made, which was itself something of an outlier in his filmography.
Digger will team Cruise with the brilliant Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Birdman, The Revenant) for a mysterious black comedy project in which he reportedly plays "the most powerful man in the world" as he seeks to rectify a mistake he caused and save the world from catastrophe.
It remains to be seen what any of this means - is Cruise playing the President of the United States or a literal superhero?
Either way, Cruise looks like he's having an absolute ball from the vague teaser trailer released so far, even if this looks like nothing Cruise has done on-screen since, well, his legendary turn in Tropic Thunder back in 2008.
Could this be the role that finally wins Cruise a competitive acting Oscar? Given that Iñárritu previously directed Leonardo DiCaprio to his first, belated Best Actor gong, it just might be.
