Saltburn filmmaker Emerald Fennell certainly seems like an inspired choice to helm a new adaptation of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights, though the production faced considerable online uproar once the central casting choices were announced.

34-year-old Margot Robbie has been cast as protagonist Catherine Earnshaw, who isn't any older than her late teens by the end of the story, while 27-year-old Jacob Elordi is playing Heathcliff, who is around 40 years of age and of contentious ethnicity.

Naturally many chose to criticise these casting choices as against the spirit of the original story, and while Fennell's singular take will assuredly be divisive, especially with Brontë purists, she's certainly made an effort to indicate that she's not trying to make a fastidiously faithful adaptation.

After all, the marketing has included the film's title in quotation marks - a smart and simple way of telling audiences that this is an interpretation of the original tale rather than a facsimile.

This isn't to say that Robbie and Elordi's casting will work in the final film, but there's likely more thought behind it than the kneejerk criticism suggests.
