Auteur Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) has been prepping his Marilyn Monroe biopic for well over a decade, which was finally shot in the summer of 2019 after Netflix revived the ailing project.

Ana de Armas will star as Monroe in what, until recently, was being widely tipped as a buzzy Oscar project for all involved.

Yet reports suggest that Dominik's film is a far grittier and more explicit warts-and-all biopic which doesn't shy away from the transgressive aspects of Joyce Carol Oates' novel.

Though Dominik allegedly fought Netflix over the final cut, they apparently relented, and the film is expected to premiere on the festival circuit sometime this year ahead of its streaming release.

It sounds like there's a fair chance this channels the same divisive energy of recent Princess Diana biopic Spencer, and we can only hope so.
