20 Utterly Devastating Movie Endings No One Saw Coming
10. All The Bright Places
Justice Smith may have starred in some huge blockbusters in the form of the Jurassic World franchise, Detective Pikachu, Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves, and, most recently, Now You See Me Now You Don't, but arguably his best work came in 2020 opposite Elle Fanning in All the Bright Places.
The adaptation of Jennifer Niven's novel from 2015 offered a deep and uncomfortable look into suicide through the eyes of the two protagonists, Finch (Smith) and Violet (Fanning), and you could argue that it always felt as though a happy ending wasn't going to come.
However, the bulk of the story was framed around the troubled mind of Violet, with Finch becoming something of a comfort to her, ultimately seeing her defeat her thoughts of suicide. This wasn't the end, though, as the perspective shifted to that of Justice Smith's character.
At the beginning, and throughout much of the story, the audience was scared for the fate of Violet, while the end of the film saw her in a desperate search for Finch, only to discover that he had jumped into the river, never to be seen again.
