20 Utterly Devastating Movie Endings No One Saw Coming
7. The Mist
Any novel, game, or comic book film adaptation, or even a remake of an older release, is always going to cause issues in how faithful it stays to the source material. Typically, there will be complaints either that too much was different or not enough was different.
Another level to this entirely is the changing of a story's ending, which in turn can completely alter how it is viewed and taken. This seems to happen a lot with Stephen King adaptations, as the likes of Doctor Sleep, The Long Walk, and The Shining all differed to varying degrees, but arguably none more so than The Mist.
The story revolves around a mysterious fog that descends on a small town, hiding Lovecraftian horrors that devour those that get too close to it. In the book, King gives something of a hopeful ending, where a potential safe haven is suggested, something that couldn't have been further from how the film concluded.
On the big screen, it was the opposite of hopeful, as David (Thomas Jane) gave into the horror of the mist, and gave the four people he was sharing his car with, including his own son, the "gift" of a quick death by the gun in his hand. Though this was done to spare them the terror of what their lives had become, not 30 seconds later he was seemingly saved, deeming their sacrifices futile and pointless.
