20 Utterly Devastating Movie Endings No One Saw Coming

There are some films that, no matter how brutal, no matter how gory, and no matter how downright tough to watch they have been, can still surprise an audience by going even deeper.

David Fincher's Seven was already an incredibly compelling story, many would argue the acclaimed director's best, while Detectives Mills and Somerset (Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman) were hunting down the killer who took his victims' lives according to the seven deadly sins. However, when John Doe (Kevin Spacey) presented himself to the police station, things kicked up to another gear entirely.

This was the endgame of the plan, and it involved a sacrifice. The final two sins to go were envy and wrath, for the latter of which John Doe enraged Detective Mills so much so that John was killed with a bullet to the head, completing his masterpiece with his own death. And what spurred Mills to this act of cold-blooded murder? Only one of the most famous movie scenes of all time.

Even knowing how cruel and cold a killer John Doe was, cutting off the innocent Tracy Mills' (Gwyneth Paltrow) head and putting it in a box for her husband to see was way beyond anything else that he had done.
