20 Utterly Devastating Movie Endings No One Saw Coming
1. Uncut Gems
From the very opening scene of the film, it was immediately clear that Uncut Gems would be unlike anything else in Adam Sandler's past. This wasn't a goofy comedy, it wasn't even close to the more serious Punch-Drunk Love, this was a truly gritty piece of work that the actor embraced.
As Howard Ratner, Sandler played a man spinning way too many plates, with every single one about to fall, and often his solution was to add another plate. He owed a lot of people a lot of money, and his scheming was only working to get himself deeper into the hole.
His saving grace came with another of these mad moments, when he took $165,000 and put it on a ludicrous NBA bet that would have seen him pull in over $1 million. Problem solved, right? He had the people he owed money to trapped in his store watching the game with him, there to share the moment the Celtics beat the 76ers, and his money was guaranteed.
However, the classic happy ending for the plucky underdog, this was not. Howard let the men go from in between the two locked doors of his shop, and though they had just seen him win over $1 million, more than enough to pay them back, he had a bullet put through his head, seemingly just because the guy didn't like him. This was a jaw-dropping finale to arguably the best Sandler film ever.
