20 Utterly Devastating Movie Endings No One Saw Coming
19. Fallen
Some of the endings on this list have had major impact upon certain characters, while others have been more understated yet still shocking. However, the final scenes of 1998's Fallen change everything the audience thought they knew about the story they were being told.
This is because it was from the point of view of a hidden, unreliable narrator from the start. Thanks to John Hobbes' (Denzel Washington) voiceover at the very beginning, telling that this was a story of how he almost died to the image of him crawling injured through the snow, there was an idea of where the narrative would lead.
Throughout the film that followed John's fight with the supernatural, in particular a fallen angel by the name of Azazel, there was no suggestion that the audience had been lied to, until the big reveal. That voiceover at the start? That was Azazel, possessing the body and voice of Hobbes to tell the story.
Just when it seemed as though the demon had been defeated, the telltale clue of this being the time that he almost died comes into play, as he takes over the body of a nearby cat, leaving a trail of bodies that included that of Washington's protagonist in his wake.
