Things have now gotten to a point in the movie industry, and arguably within the saturated horror genre more than anywhere else, that it has almost become the norm to try and defy the norm. Nobody wants to retread the same steps as others before them, and so certain expectations need to be turned on their heads.

This was certainly the mindset that went into creating The Cabin in the Woods, something of a satirical take on the more generic slasher, whereby a group of college students went to the titular cabin in the woods and had creepy things happen to them, but all the while with something sinister going on a level or two deeper.

In fairness, from the very start, it was apparent that this was more than just your typical slasher, with Gary Sitterson and Steve Hadley (Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford) in the underground lab being the first characters shown, but even so, the actual ending surely couldn't have been telegraphed by anyone at any point.

Essentially, the monsters that were being used for such sick games were all ultimately released, shortly before a giant hand brought about the literal end of the world because the rules of a specific ritual weren't followed to perfection. Oh, and Sigourney Weaver appeared as "The Director" right at the end, in a bizarrely similar role to her character "The Big Guy", played in Paul the very same year.
