20 War Movies EVERY Film Fan Should Have Seen

9. Apocalypse Now

Apocalypse Now Harrison Ford
United Artists

Much like the surreal horror of 1985's Come and See, 1979's infamously troubled production Apocalypse Now lives up to its grandiose title as The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola aims to retell Joseph Conrad's novella Heart of Darkness as a strange trip into the darkest corners of the human psyche.

Set in a Technicolor Vietnam which acts, for all intents and purposes, as a purgatory for Martin Sheen's tortured and increasingly unstable anti-hero, this vibrant nightmare disregards realism in favour of a strange and unsettling illustration of the war's moral cost.

Brando is captivating as the monstrous Kurtz, and the film is filled with unforgettably unsettling imagery which underlines its atmosphere of dread.
