20 War Movies EVERY Film Fan Should Have Seen

19. Catch-22

The Bridge on the River Kwai
Paramount Pictures

Adapted from Joseph Heller's blackly comic masterpiece of the same name, this 1970 satire deserved far more critical acclaim than it received upon its initial release.

Unfortunately, the flick was more than a bit outshined by the same year's M*A*S*H, another blackly comic war satire which nearly made this list, too.

In the end though, Altman's warmer film spawned a television spin off which made war look like Friends. Thus, this spot went to Catch 22, whose caustic story of a young soldier who grows disillusioned with the scam artistry, general idiocy, and dishonesty he witnesses during his tour of duty remains brutally funny and bracingly honest.
