18. Hacksaw Ridge

The Bridge on the River Kwai
Summit Entertainment

Coming from controversial auteur/ former Martin Riggs and Mad Max Mel Gibson, 2016's Hacksaw Ridge is the wildly underrated true story of Desmond Doss.

A conscientious objector who refused to carry a weapon into combat, Doss is a rare figure in US military history who actually earns the sobriquet "hero". Saving the lives of a hundred men whilst sustaining injuries of his own, Doss became the lone conscientious objector to be awarded from bravery above and beyond the call of duty.

The moving, brutally violent story of his time in Okinawa is immortalised in Gibson's dark and elegiac film, a fitting tribute to a genuinely selfless and deeply courageous hero whose immoveable faith carried him through unimaginable horrors.
