20 Well-Known Movie "Facts" That Are Actually Bulls**t
4. The Movie Wasn't Nominated For A Single Oscar - The Shawshank Redemption
The Shawshank Redemption, a motion picture that pretty much seems to have earned a place in everybody's list of "favourite movies, like, ever," has become renowned for the fact that - upon first release - it flopped at the box office. Everybody ignored this classic film as it played in theatres until it made its way to VHS and word of mouth propelled it to legendary status. Worst of it all, it wasn't nominated for a single Oscar. All true, right? Well, only partly. Whilst The Shawshank Redemption did have to wait 'til its VHS release to find an audience, it wasn't ignored by the Hollywood Awards circuit to the extent that the myth purports. It was, in fact, nominated for a whopping seven Oscars. No, it didn't win any (though it certainly deserved to nab Best Picture over Forrest Gump), but seven nominations isn't all that shabby for a movie often thought to have been snubbed.
