20 Worst Movie Moments Of 2019
9. Terminator - Dark Fate - The Death Of John Connor
It's safe to say no-one saw this coming, but that isn't a good thing.
Terminator: Dark Fate starts out with a flashback in which a Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) successfully kills John Connor as a child. With him out of the picture (it's not a fake-out death, but given how shocking it was many probably assumed it was), the film focuses instead on Sarah Connor, the Terminator that killed John and two new characters.
Yes, this was incredibly brave but when you subvert expectations this radically you need to have a good reason for doing so and the death of John Connor ultimately felt pointless and shock-for-shock's sake. Removing such an important character who provided much of the heart of the original films not only felt like an undermining blow to the film's story but also an overly aggressive "f**k you" to the franchise's fans.
Dark Fate is perfectly good overall, but this was a misjudged decision and while fans sometimes over-react to things, in this case the fan backlash was entirely understandable.
