20 Worst Movie Moments Of 2019
2. Serenity - The Plot Twist
Serenity, which was 2019's worst film prior to Cats, is this year's The Book of Henry; a disaster-piece of a movie that's so misjudged it's actually kind-of entertaining.
Serenity's big reveal is that the island where it's set is actually a video game, in which protagonist Baker Dill (Matthew McConaughey) is an avatar for the father the game's young creator, Patrick (Rafael Sayegh), lost in Iraq. The game is a way for Patrick to cope with his difficult family life, more specifically his abusive stepfather Frank (Jason Clarke).
It's all even dumber than it sounds. The reveal of the twist is completely misjudged, with the film blatantly signposting it before the intended 'reveal', while it also lacks any self-awareness. Everything about this is completely stupid, yet Serenity treats things such as Baker talking to a guy named 'The Rules' as the most natural thing in the world and plays it totally straight.
It gets even worse later when Patrick gets Baker to kill his stepfather's avatar in the game, which then gives this young boy the 'courage' to murder his stepfather. Serenity actually had the gall to depict a kid murdering someone as its triumphant 'happy ending.'
What a hideous mess!
