20 Worst Movie Moments Of The Decade
5. The Book Of Henry - Sniper Rifle
The Book of Henry is one of those films which is so ridiculous it cannot be described in words. Still, I'll give it a shot.
Child genius Henry (Jaeden Martell), discovers his next-door neighbour and crush Christina (Maddie Ziegler) is being abused by her stepfather, Glenn (Dean Norris). He formulates a plan to deal with it since Glenn is paying off social services, but then dies from a brain tumour.
Nevertheless, he leaves behind a tape for his mum, Susan (Naomi Watts), and asks her to carry out his plan to shoot Glenn with a sniper rifle... and she very nearly does it. Just before she shoots Glenn, she sees a photo of Henry and abruptly realises that Henry was just a child and that she must act as an adult, so she confronts Glenn and tells him she's going to expose him.
Meanwhile, the school headmistress watches Christina perform a sad ballet performance and purely because of this she concludes Christina is an abuse victim, so she reports Glenn, who then commits suicide and Susan adopts Christina
If you read that with a straight face, you deserve a medal.
This is all about as stupid, misjudged and offensive as cinema gets. Not only is it illogical (why couldn't Henry have planted audio devices in Glenn's house to get evidence rather than killing him? Why would Susan actually consider murdering another human being based on the words of an 11-year-old?) but it's an awful portrayal of serious issues.
