Whose big idea was it to team up Ethan Hawke and Selina Gomez? We're not saying that there's no scenario where that combination wouldn't have worked, but... well, we are saying that, actually: what gives? The paper thin premise behind this bewildering little action flick concerns a former race car driver who pairs up with a tough talking thief as they attempt to rescue his wife from the clutches of Jon Voight. So far, so generic. Pfft: if only this movie had been "generic." Absolutely nothing works in what might just be the most exhausting car chase movie ever. Getaway is only 90 minutes long, and yet the plot feels stretch to incomprehension. What's worse is the fact that this could have been something of a guilty pleasure: a B-movie on purpose. Instead, director Courtney Solomon treats the whole thing with an irritating seriousness. Really, Ethan Hawke could have only agreed to this to fulfil some childhood dream about driving fast cars.
