12. King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword
You have to really admire the gall of Guy Ritchie's King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword. It was designed to be a franchise kick-starter (hence the sub-title and the lack of any sign of Merlin despite his importance to the legend) and was lavished with an almighty, unjust $175m budget as a mark of confidence.
Sadly, it wasn't anywhere near as good as Ritchie's horribly under-appreciated The Man From UNCLE. The gritty tone was too hard to take seriously, it fatally misjudged the huge lack of interest in the Arthurian legend as a cinematic prospect, and as a result it made just $130m back. Which is quite a bit less than it lost, including marketing costs.
Nobody really went for Ritchie's attempt to reinvent Arthur as a brash superhero (even though Charlie Hunnam isn't actually entirely awful), thanks in part to a lacklustre villain, a terrible wordy script and a just slightly wrong head.
