20 Worst Movies Of 2017 (So Far)

10. Monster Trucks

On paper, the idea of a boy meets monster family film that messes with the ET formula by adding a petrol-headed spirit wasn't a terrible one. It actually looked just about bonkers enough to work, in fact, and director Chris Wedge clearly knows how to make arresting kid-friendly movies since he helmed Ice Age and the under-appreciated Robots.

Unfortunately, the fact that Monster Trucks was initially supposed to come out in 2015 before being shunted back several times was the first sign that not all was well. Paramount having absolutely no faith in it not to lose them more than $100m well before release was an even bigger one.

The film struggles because it's monstrously boring - it might have a monster, but it has no personality and there's no real unique selling point in the film-making. It also misses just about every selling point for the kids who could have made it a financial success: it wasn't funny, it wasn't heart-felt and it was missing that almost Amblin-trademarked family spirit it really needed.
