20 Worst Movies Of 2017 (So Far)
9. Underworld: Blood Wars
For a while back when it was setting out, the Underworld movies had something about them: they were like a more heavy metal Blade with more stylised violence and a sort of grown-up Twilight dynamic with its vampires versus werewolves concept. On the back of that, it built up a fairly committed fanbase that earned all four of the previous movies between $90m and $160m at the box office (with the higher number improbably coming in for the last outing).
Unfortunately, the fans' reward for persisting with the franchise has been a gradual dilution of talent (where there was once Bill Nighty and Michael Sheen there's now Theo James and Tobias Menzies). Thank God for Charles Dance.
Buoyed by Awakening's $160m haul, Screen Gems brought in Anna Foerster (a positive, empowering move), but saddled her with terrible sub-par effects, an impenetrable script for casual viewers and a large disinterested cast (aside from Lara Pulver who is small joy). It's not fun, it's not clever and even the dependable mainstays previously - the violence and the action - feel phoned in.
