20 Worst Movies Of 2017 (So Far)
8. The Great Wall
By now, we should have all learned that blockbuster films dropped into the first two months of the year are usually going to be bad. Sure, Deadpool and LEGO Batman have defied expectations recently, and there's an exception when it comes to Oscar films in European territories, but generally, they're considered the dump months for a reason.
Sadly, The Great Wall bucked no expectations. It might have had some reasonably fun action sequences, but it really isn't the sum of its parts, despite having Matt Damon (controversially) in the lead and Zhang Yimou directing. Putting it next to his previous work Hero and House of Flying Daggers, it's not even on the same planet.
Damon's performance is mostly the tale of the rest of the very talented cast: they're all fatally squandered, and the budget it spent on OTT action and set-pieces that really don't work beyond the surface level. It's utterly forgettable and terribly uninteresting, despite an intriguing concept, and it's hard not to judge it very badly by what it COULD have been.
