16. All Nighter

All Nighter
Good Deed

All Nighter feels almost like JK Simmons testing the boundaries of what he can get away with. He's spent years quietly building a bullet-proof profile with audiences, and twisted with some excellent work in indie films and award-worthy offerings. Why wouldn't he then make something that the studio had so little faith in that you probably didn't even know it exists - just for fun?

That can be the only explanation for this tepid thriller that aims for emotionally fraught and lands somewhere around disinterested slop.

There's an attempt to mess with generic conventions consciously, but it's all so hard to keep track of when there is precious little reward for trying to. And by the end it's basically just a madcap cry for help from film-makers who seemingly accidentally loosened their hold on the plot and watched it tumble horribly down a hill towards meh.

There's enough from Simmons for his most ardent fans, but everyone else would be better off enjoying an actual all nighter. The hangover would be less offensive.
